Next gen of digital leaders now have access to free robotics kits

Seven Brisbane libraries now have robotics kits for children who want to code.

A generous donation of laptops and robotics kits is broadening access to Brisbane City Council’s CoderDojo program, where kids learn to code for free.

CoderDojo Brisbane kicked off its 2018 Term 1 program this week across seven Brisbane libraries, with the fresh coding ninjas ready to develop apps, build websites and learn to code.

Brisbane-based company GBST has donated laptops and 14 robotics kits to CoderDojo Brisbane.

While the CoderDojo program is free, participants are required to bring their own laptop. The donation means that kids who could not normally attend will have the opportunity to participate.

The robotics kits will also add an exciting new element to the 2018 program.

GBST Head of Digital Technology James Radvan, is the driving force behind the donation. A lead mentor at Chermside CoderDojo, James’ software career has taken him to the US, UK and Sweden but he now calls Brisbane home.

James has been involved with CoderDojo for two years as a mentor, passing on his knowledge of coding to budding coding ninjas.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the program was introduced five years ago with the goal of encouraging more children to code and more than 3500 children have taken up the opportunity.

“Demand for digital skills will only continue to grow and it’s important that as a city we provide programs to help nurture the next generation of digital leaders,” Cr Quirk said.

Brisbane Chief Digital Officer Cat Matson said the robotics kits also broaden the scope of the program.

“CoderDojo has been a great success to date and the robotics kits will be another fun and engaging element for the program this year, thanks to the generosity of GBST,” Ms Matson said.

“The digital landscape is constantly evolving and it makes sense to have kids explore new digital technologies, like robotics, from an early age.

“CoderDojo is about teaching our coding ninjas to be creators of technology and not just consumers of it, so kids become equipped with digital literacy skills of benefit for their future.”
